What happened in the titanic quarter?
Previously the largest shipyard in the world the land around the Harland and Wolff harbours has been derelict for some time after the peak of Belfast industrial power.
The company Titanic quarter LTD decided to convert the wasted land into an exiting waterfront development, called titanic quarter. By 2016, £358 million had been invested in the urban planning scheme, and 18,000 people were living, working or studying there.
What employment is available in titanic quarter?
Leisure and tourism, including urban sports park, restaurants and cafes, a marina and the adjoining odyssey complex, along with Titanic museums
Large amounts of office space being built for large companies such as banks and accountancy firms.
Industrial buildings have been renovated, such as paint hall, now called titanic studios, is now one of Europe’s largest film studios.

The Arc is a complex of 474 apartments.
Plans to build a further 5000 apartments on site.

Very close to CBD, making it very accessible.
Dedicated bus services. Areas will be built to allow rapid transport systems to be added later.
Walkways and cycle routes will be apart of the development.
How is Titanic quarter helping the environment?
Contaminated land from old industry will be restored.
Locally available, recyclable, reusable and environmentally responsible materials will be used in the construction when possible.
All buildings constructed as to reduce carbon emissions as much as possible. Carful design and energy conservation measures such as energy efficient light fittings, rainwater harvesting, and solar heating will ensure this.
The company aims to support and improve biodiversity by creating landscaped areas and habitats.

What are the pull factors for people living in Kolkata?
Job prospects in the city (not always realistic)
Work provided by jute mills, or informal jobs such as bullock cars
Education from schools in the city
Access to hospitals and clinics
May think they would get better and safer housing, most live in shanty towns.
What are characteristics of a shanty town house?
Very small, with one floor
No windows, toilets, water systems or cooking places.
Houses self made, out of flimsy materials
Tightly packed at a high density
Taxes demanded by government, but shanty town residents don’t have rights to the land they live on so they often aren’t paid
