A

Commercial:
Central business district, used for shops, businesses or offices. May also find banks and historical buildings.

Residential:
Mostly homes for people to live in.

Industrial:
Places where things are manufactured, refined, etc.

What is the central business district?

A

Land used for shops, business and offices. May also find banks and historical buildings.

Due to expensive land values and high demand for space, many properties build upwards, leading to skyscrapers and multi-story buildings.

Located in the centre as it’s a central location for roads and railways to converge. Easily accessible for workers and people seeking shops and businesses.

What is the inner city?

A

Land usually used for residential purposes. In the past there may have been factories located here.

Mainly terraced houses in a grid like pattern.

Located next to the CBD, as houses were originally built to house factory workers.

What are suburbs?

A

Tend to have a residential land use.

Houses usually larger, detached or semi detached, and have a garden. Roads arranged in Cul-de-sacs and wide avenues.

Located outside the inner city. Have access to CBD along main roads and railways and within reach of the countryside.

What are industrial zones?

A

Has land that is used for industry.

Buildings are likely older and surrounded by housing which would have originally accommodated their workers.

Older industries are found in inner cities as the city grew around them. Newer industries are often found on the outskirts as they rely on motorway transport.

What is the Rural urban fringe?

A

Often has a mixture of land uses, such as housing, golf courses, allotments, business parks and airports.

As such you may find detached houses with gardens, recycling facilities and park and ride facilities.

Great competition for land here, large space available in the countryside is attractive to prospective developers.
