What are inner city houses like?
Outside
Terraced, cramped with little green space around them.
Little green space nearby.
Limited play space for children with streets busy with children.
Inside:
Prone to damp as there is no cavity wall
Electrical systems and fixtures such as windows and doors may need replaced
Roofs are made of heavy slate and require regular attention to keep from leaking
Draughty and expensive to heat
What is the community like in inner city areas
Once housed strong communities in the past, but most have weaker communities as new residents move in and out.
Inequality, e.g. differences in wealth, well being and access to services.
Often experience poor quality of life.
What is gentrification?
The process of people with high incomes buying properties and renovation them.
What are advantages to gentrification?
New businesses open up.
Old buildings preserved and maintained.
Area can be improved in appearance with more wealthy people moving in
What are some disadvantages to gentrification?
Price increases, pricing people out of an area.
Small businesses and low income families move out.
Sense of community can be undermined.
Why do inner city areas have traffic issues?
Built before most people had cars. Most residents have their own cars but no garage/driveway.
What air quality issues are there in inner city areas?
Very poor quality. Most pollution caused by diesel vehicles emitting nitrogen dioxide.
Leads to premature deaths.
How is journey time in inner city areas?
Congestion is rising in these areas and traffic is moving more slowly.
What are advantages and disadvantages of public transport.
Advantages:
More environmentally friendly
Disadvantages:
Can become very expensive.
What are some cultural issues in inner city areas?
Ethnic tensions
e.g. 100 Roma people left Belfast after there were attacks on them.
Religious tensions
e.g. hate crimes against Muslim have been on the rise in London
Language barriers
e.g. people with little English struggle to get access to healthcare, state services or employment
