urban guildford trip - paper 2 Flashcards
What is the median
to find the median you need to order the data and then find the middle value. This divides the data into two halves.
What is the mode
the number that appears most frequently in a data set
What is the range
the difference between the highest and lowest values
What are quartiles
dividing a list of numbers into four equal groups-two above and two below the median.
What is data manipulation
work out range, average, percentage, etc. (except photos)
What is primary data
Data you collected first-hand during the investigation
What is secondary data
Data collected by another party that you have used in the investigation
Quantitive data
Numerical data
Qualitative data
Any information gathered that is not numerical data
What is random sampling
where samples are chosen fairly randomly, and every pebble has an equal chance of being selected
What is systematic sampling
means working to a system to collect data, for example every 10m across the river
What is stratified sampling
means collecting a sample, made up of different parts e.g. deliberately selecting samples of different pebble sizes from a point in the river to gain a range of pebbles found there.
What is High income
People who earn high wages
What is Low income
People who earn low wages
What is reliable
how likely something is to be true or accurate

- mostly apartments and offices + some have skyscrapers
- very built up
State some facts about the inner city

- factories / brownfield sites where factories were
State some facts about the inner suburbs
- semi detached homes - 2 homes connected
- more garden space (front and back) for homes
- getting greener
State some facts about the outer suburbs
- detached housing
- bigger gardens and green space
State some facts about the urban-rural periphery
The edge of land just outside the built up area where the urban and rural land connect
State some facts about the country side
- rural
- not built up
State some examples of secondary data
- Census data
- Crime Map
- House prices
What is the litter count collection method
- Firstly using a ipad I set a timer for 10 minutes.
- I then walked around and noted down using the pen and paper all the litter I could see until the time has run out.
- The amount of litter and type of litter were both recorded.
- This was repeated at each site.
What is the traffic count collection method
- Firstly using an ipad we set a timer for 3 minutes.
- Then we stood still and counted how many cars, bikes, vans, lorries, bus and motorbikes went past in one direction until the time had ran out.
- The number of vehicles was recorded.
- This was repeated at each site.
What is the decibel reading collection method
- Firstly, when you have reached the sight open the ‘decibel 10’ app on your ipad.
- It will then come up with the current, average, maximum and example of the noise level decibel readings.
- You get your paper and pen and record down your numbers in the table.
- Make sure you repeat this at each site.
What is the bipolar (environmental quality survey) collection method
- Firstly open up your booklet and read each criteria.
- You then fill in each box depending on what you would rank each factor to be on the scale from -3 to +3 with -3 being the worst and +3 being the best.
- At the end of each site you add up the scores.
- The site with the highest score is the site with the best environmental quality.
What is the annotated photos collection method
- Enter your site you are there to study
- Get out your ipad and get up the camera
- Find a spot which you want to take a picture of, which you would deem right for the drawing later
- Annotate it depending on the different factors of choice
What is the questionaire method
- Before going on your trip, make a list of a set of questions you want to ask, relating to your hypothesis and aim
- When you are there your going to find someone at each site and your going to ask them if they can help you complete your survey
- If yes, question them and record your answers. If no, move on and find someone else
4 ways of presenting data
- Either Litter or Traffic count (proportional circles or proportional lines on map of Guildford)
- Bi-Polar Graph
- Annotated Photos
- Bar chart for decibel readings or questionnaire data.
