Urban Forms (Unit 1, Topic 2) Flashcards
Urban Form/ Urban Model/ Urban Zone/ Urban Function/ Urban Land Use/ Urban Morphology/Physical, Social and Political Affecting Factors of Land Use/ Burgess, Hoyt, Urban Realms, Harris and Ullman's Models.
What is Urban Form?
Relates to the physical characteristics that make up an urban area
-Shape
-Size
-Density of Population
-Agriculture of the Settlement
What is an Urban Model?
Simplified version of a city
What is an Urban Zone?
Similar land uses and buildings in an area
What is Urban Function?
What happens in the area
What is Urban Land Use?
What the land is used for
What is Urban Morphology?
Spatial structure and organisation of an urban area
What are the Physical Factors that affect Land Use?
Coastline- urban areas only develop inland, series of concentric zones develop as half circles (Mumbai is built on a peninsula)
Rivers- Floodplains in industrial areas (London)
Steep Slopes- repel development, although some attract higher value land as they have good views
Wind- westerly prevailing winds blow pollution west to east, locations to the west are typically more expensive than the east
What are the Social Factors that affect Land Use?
Life cycle- mobility of population (age)
Social groups- ethnicity, income, religion all result a residential mosaic. Different groups will segregate themselves, ghettos can usually develop if ethnic groups are highly segregated
What are the Political Factors that affect Land Use?
Greenfield Sites
Brownfield Sites
Local Authority generally on the outskirts of the CBD controlling the area
What is The Burgess Model?
The CBD is at the centre of the city then as you move out you go through different layers. 2-Inner city 3-Suburbs 4-Urban-Rural Fringe 5-Green Belt
What is the Hoyt Sector Model?
The CBD is at the centre of the city but others areas develop in sectors outwards of the CBD
Factories will be near trade routes like roads and rivers whilst housing will be near green and more expensive land
What is the Urban Realms Model?
Smaller towns join together to form one large metropolis. Each city will have its own purpose and trade routes within the links
What is the Harris and Ullman’s Multiple Nuclei Model?
Areas of the city are more dotted around rather than in sectors with the CBD not always being at the centre with areas just made for retail or industrial use
