Originally it was a fishing village that created a port significantly increasing its trade with its easy ocean access

Slower growth, can provide basic services starting to improve basic needs, self help services provided

It holds many publishing or television networks headquarters, the Bollywood headquarters are located here

It is the commercial capital of India and attracts lots of key investments and is the concentration of TNC headquarters

Centre of Government for the Maharashtra state and the government employees make up a large percent of the workforce in Mumbai

Textiles and precious metals are made and imported and exported here with it being called the ‘Manchester of the East’ but it does contain lost of brownfield sites

The capacity of the airport is set to be increased. The port handles 55-60% of India’s cargo. There are two main railway routes

There is high employment within industries like pottery, there are multiple high streets containing a variety of goods. 85% of the people have a job within the slums, 15,000 factories with a 1 billion turnover rate. 300 bakeries with products shipped around the globe
What are the economic disadvantages of the slums in Mumbai?
26% of factory workers live in factories in poor working and living conditions working under cheap labour. There are little high paying jobs regulated in the slum
What are the social advantages of the slums in Mumbai?
There is low crime and a strong community with organised wash areas and neighbourhood meeting places. There are fully functioning high streets with multiple shops and people seem to share everything
What are some of the positives to the responses the government has made to improve the slums?
Large scale redevelopments- High value area, houses lots of people and has low crime rates and unemployment’s in neighbourhoods
Local Improvements- Adds extra floor for all of the family members to be accommodated. Improved lighting, ventilation, toilets and baths. Linked work areas, communal workspace, extra terrace and kiln for pottery work. More people brought out of shanty towns, low cost, electricity and plumbing
