Problems with tenements
Very small flats with families up to 10 staying in them
Dark and damp rooms
Tuberculosis and bronchitis spread quick from damp
Located close to factories, exposed to smoke and chemicals causing asthma
Didn’t have electricity, heating or running water
Life expectancy in Gorbals was 50
Tenement renovation
Some demolished
Combined flats to make one larger flat
Added heating, electricity and internal bathrooms
Outer of buildings cleaned and streets made one way
Problems with council estates
People moved from tenements to estates on edge of city
Didn’t have space for shops, pubs, cinemas, ect
Only have post box, phone box and one bus service
High unemployment and crime rates
Families left and houses abandoned
Housing management strategies - council estates
Established 4 main council estates (Castlemilk, Drumchapel, Easterhouse and Pollok)
Planned as low density, semi-detached houses with gardens but council realised it would cost too much and take up too much land so built cheaper 3 and 4 story flats
Problems with the high rise flats
Poor materials used causing structural issues
Due to flat roofs and Scottish climate damp was common
People felt isolated especially on top floors
Many families left leaving flats empty attracting criminals, drug dealers and squatters
Housing management strategies - new towns
Built 50s and 60s to house overspill from inner cities
Well planned settlements Incorporated workplaces and shops, libraries, schools, leisure centres
Foreign companies encouraged to locate to industrial estates on edge of new towns, offered loans or grants and new buildings so would provide jobs
Mix of flats, cottages, semi-detached and detached housing
Red road flats
Built 60s to tackle housing crisis
Intended to be fast, cost effective solution but became run down and vandalized
Damp, anti social conditions
Very little open Green space
2005 Glasgow housing association demolished one of tallest buildings to start regeneration
2015 all demolished with replacement housing designed to represent areas heritage, attracting people with higher income increasing social and economic mix
The Gorbals
Low quality tenement housing for workers
Overcrowded slum area
Cramped, damp, suffered from pollution, no inside toilet
30s gang culture
Post war regeneration
Lack of community spirit after old tenements replaced by poorer quality housing
New tenement style housing built to encourage spirit
Edinburgh transport - solutions to congestion
Cycle lanes so cyclists don’t slow down traffic
More busses so less people are driving their own car
More main roads (by-pass) instead of small roads
More public transport (trams)

Reduces number of cars in centre
Costs to park there, discouraging people
Green ways (bus lanes)

Council makes money from fines and takes cars off road
All traffic is forced into one lane
