Q

4 main causes of UHI:

A
  • Absorption of heat from urban surfaces
  • Air pollution (creates pollution dome which traps outgoing heat radiation and reflects it back to the surface)
  • Heat from human activity
  • Less evapotranspiration

Q

Winds are affected by buildings in urban areas:

A

Because tall buildings create friction that slows down moving air.

You get turbulence around buildings

Canyon effect = powerful gusts of winds

Q

2 main reasons for more rain in urban areas:

A

UHI - means urban air is warm and warm air can hold more wate, called convenctional rainfall

Dust and pollution, condensation nuclei (water molecules attach to the particles to form cloud droplets), encourages clouds to form.
