What is a location ?
The physical point of where a place is
What are locales ?
Locales are locations in a place that are associated with everyday activities. E.g school
People are likely to show behavioral traits in a specific locale.
What is Sense of place ?
Is the subjective emotional attachment to a place, which gives it meaning.
E.g string attachment to your house where you grew up
What is Placelessness ?
Suggests that a place isn’t unique.
However, it is argued that place is about people and different people will interact in different locales, which makes places unique.
Attachment ?
- Your attachment to a place grows stronger overtime, more experiences in the place the more likely you are to be attached to it.
Greater intensity + number of experiences you have in a place the greater depth of attachment.
What is Topophilia ?
- Concerns the love of a place and having a strong attachment to it.
What is Topophobia ?
- Is the dislike of a place.
It is possible to have Topophobia and still have an attachment with a place but the attachment will be negative.
What are Near places ?
- Places which are close to us
- Near places are subjective
E.g someone who is able to fly 100km in a very short time to a place may class that place as a near place, whereas if someone in the UK has to drive 100km to a place they will class that as a far place.
What is a Far place ?
- Places that are distant
- Both near and far places have emotional meaning
E.g people feeling homesick when they are 10 mins from home but to they it may feel like a far place
What factors come together to make up a ‘place’ ?
- Location
- Physical characteristics (topography of the land)
- Human characteristics ( who lives there )
- Sense of place ( emotional meaning a place has )
All aspects of places and the meanings are constantly changing ?
- Sense of place: may change if an individual has a tragic event at a certain place
- flows : flows of money into a city may cause loads of MNC and open new factories and close down traditional ones and shops
- Human characteristics: migration in and out of a place will change the demographic of people
What are Experienced Places ?
- Places that we have actually visited and spent time in.
A persons sense of a media place can be very different to the lived experience of the same place this is because the media may present a place in a certain way for a particular purpose.
What are Media places ?
- Places we haven’t visited
- Places we have created a sense of place for through the depiction of the media.
- Media sources can change our sense of place subconsciously
What is Genius Loci ?
Genius loci is the spirit of a place
It suggests every place has a unique spirit based on everything for the location is made up of now and in the past
