New hotels built on old industrial land due to increased tourism
Poor housing replaced with new housing - increase living standards
Environment improvements by landscaping and renovating dock lands
Problems in shanty towns
Poor water supply and sewage disposal can cause diseases such as cholera
Unemployment is common and jobs are underpaid
Lack of services like police hospital schools
Drugs and gangs are common in these areas - unsafe
Are often built in unsuitable areas like steep hills
Houses are built out of scrap materials making them prone to diseases like malaria
