Galciation Flashcards
How can people Leaving gates open be solved
Installing self closing gates to avoid risk of animals escaping
Install styles that tourists can climb over to avoid walls being damaged
Pets of lead / sheep scaring
Putting signs to remind tourists to keep dogs on a lead and putting fines in place if they dont
Littering
The Lake District had no bins to encourage tourists to take their litter home
Foot path erosion
The national park educates tourists by providing information and guided walks
Using hard wearing gravel to repair damaged paths or creating new routes can make them more durable
What is plucking ?
Plucking is when I’ve sticks on to rocks and as the glacier moves down hill the rock is ripped out
What is abrasion?
Abrasion happens when rocks frozen into the sides or base of the glacier grind at the valley floor as the glacier moves
What is frost shattering
Water collects in cracks in rocks at cold temperatures the water expands and freezes and puts pressure on the rock . This happens lots until the rock shatters
Formation of corries
Before glaciation
Draw diagram*
Snow collects in hollow, air is squeezed out , turns to ice
Snow collects in north facing hollows , overtime the snow is compressed and turns to ice . I’ve moved down hill by the weight of the snow and gravity
Formation of a Corrie
During glaciation
Draw diagram*
Plucking steepens Blackwall
Abrasion deepens hollow
Plucking occurs when ice sticks on to rocks and as the glacier moves the rock is ripped out.
Abrasion occurs when rocks freeze into the glacier and grinds at the hollow floor as it moves.
Frost shattering may inccorporate material into the glacier
Formation of a Corrie
After glaciation
Draw diagram*
Steep back wall due to frost shattering * Corrie lip* scree* tarn*
The glacier has melted leaving an arm chair shaped hollow , with steep back walls . Water sometimes collects in a hollow and forms a tarn
How are corries shown on an os map
Contour lines in a horseshoe shape
Often has a circular lake in middle may be labelled as “Corrie or “cwm”
How are ushaped valleys shown on an os map
Very steep sides
often a misfit steam at bottom flat valley floor
How are arêtes shown on an is map
2 corries back to back
Close contour lines
Top often has dotted lines along top(footpath)
How is a truncated spur shown on an os map
Always on the sides of a u shaped valley
Can have exposed rock/scree
Pyrimadal peaks formation
Before glaciation
Drawing*
Snow collects in 3 or more hollows and turns to ice
I’ve behind to move downhill, pushed by weight of snow and pulled by gravity
