Q

Foot path erosion

A

The national park educates tourists by providing information and guided walks

Using hard wearing gravel to repair damaged paths or creating new routes can make them more durable

Q

What is abrasion?

A

Abrasion happens when rocks frozen into the sides or base of the glacier grind at the valley floor as the glacier moves

Q

What is frost shattering

A

Water collects in cracks in rocks at cold temperatures the water expands and freezes and puts pressure on the rock . This happens lots until the rock shatters

Q

Formation of corries

Before glaciation

A

Draw diagram*

Snow collects in hollow, air is squeezed out , turns to ice

Snow collects in north facing hollows , overtime the snow is compressed and turns to ice . I’ve moved down hill by the weight of the snow and gravity

Q

Formation of a Corrie

During glaciation

A

Draw diagram*

Plucking steepens Blackwall
Abrasion deepens hollow

Plucking occurs when ice sticks on to rocks and as the glacier moves the rock is ripped out.

Abrasion occurs when rocks freeze into the glacier and grinds at the hollow floor as it moves.

Frost shattering may inccorporate material into the glacier

Q

Formation of a Corrie
After glaciation

A

Draw diagram*
Steep back wall due to frost shattering * Corrie lip* scree* tarn*

The glacier has melted leaving an arm chair shaped hollow , with steep back walls . Water sometimes collects in a hollow and forms a tarn

Q

How are corries shown on an os map

A

Contour lines in a horseshoe shape
Often has a circular lake in middle may be labelled as “Corrie or “cwm”

Q

Pyramidal peak formation
During glaciation

A

Drawing *

The back walls of all the corries are eroded backwards toward each other by plucking and abrasion

Plucking occurs ….
Abrasion occurs ….

17
Q

Pyramidal peak formation
After glaciation

A

The erosional processes make corries on all sides of the mountain and as glaciers erode towards each other, the corries get bigger dormoing arêtes and meat at a peak
Frost shattering erodes the top of the mountain and creates a jagged peak

18
Q

What is the case study for coasts

A

Dorset
