Coasts Flashcards
1-3 formation of sand spit
1 Sandspits form where the coastline changes direction
2 longshore drift transports sand and deposits to an sheltered area
3 longshore drift is when the sea picks up material and drags it across the beach at an upward angle and then down at a right angle
4-6 formation of sandspit
4 deposited sand builds up overtime until it is above sea level . This deposition continues until the beach extends over the sea and forms a sand spit
5 sandspits can also form a curved end due to a change in wind direction
Salt marsh or mud flats can form in an area of calm water behind a sandspit
formation of a sandbar
1 If a sand spit builds out into a bay, in time it might extend over the bay and connect with the other side of longshore drift
2 longshore drift is when the sea picks up material and drags it across the beach at an upward angle and then down at a right angle
3 the shallow , stagnant water behind a sandbar is called a lagoon
4 after time it may dry out and vegetation can grow here
