What information is given to a patient in regard to difficulties they may encounter with their URA?
A
- Will seem bulky at first –> will get used it it
- Will cause mild discomfort –> means it is working
- Will affect speech (lisping) –> practice reading aloud at home
- Will salivate more –> subsides over time
- Give pt contact details in case of emergencies

What INSTRUCTIONS are given to patients in regards to their URA?
A
- Wear appliance 24/7 EVEN meal times (except contact sports)
- Clean after every meal
- Remove for contact sports and wear mouthguard
- Avoid hard, sticky foods (will destroy appliance)
- Be careful with hot food and drinks (base plate)
- Non-compliance WILL lengthen tx

What is check upon delivery of a URA?
A
- Ensure correct appliance for correct patient
- Ensure components are correct
- Ensure no faults (sharp)
- Check wire integrity
Once above checked, fit in mouth
- Check for trauma/ blanching
- Check posterior retention (flyovers -> arrowheads)
- Check anterior retention
- Activate appliance
- Demonstrate insertion and removal, ask pt to try
- REVIEW = every 4-6 weeks
