Interceptive Flashcards
What is meant by the term ‘interceptive orthodontics’?
Any procedure that will REDUCE or ELIMINATE the severity of a DEVELOPING malocclusion
What is the general eruption sequence of PRIMARY teeth?
a-b-d-c-e
Lowers before uppers
what are the chances of crowding if spacing were as follows:
- No spacing
- <3mm
- 3-6mm
- > 6mm
No spacing = 66%
<3mm = 50%
3-6mm = 20%
> 6mm = no crowding
What are the eruption dates of PERMANENT teeth?
UPPER 6 = 6yrs 1 = 7yrs 2 = 8yrs 4 = 10yrs 5 = 10yrs 3 = 11yrs 7 = 12yrs
LOWERS 6 = 6yrs 1 = 6yrs 2 = 8yrs 3 = 9yrs 4 = 10yrs 5 = 10yrs 7 = 12yrs
How is an upper central supernumary incisor managed?
- Remove deciduous and supernumerary
- Expose/ bond
- Create space
- Monitor (>1.5yrs)
What is mean by the term ‘leeway space’?
Difference between e,d,c and 3,4,5,
What are the normal leeway space measurements for uppers and lowers?
UPPER = 1.5mm LOWER = 2.5mm
How is early loss of a’s and b’s managed?
Little impact, monitor
How is early loss of c’s managed?
BALANCE
How is early loss of d’s managed?
Small centre line shift, consider balance under GA
How is the planned extraction of 6’s managed?
- Don’t balance with sound tooth
- Extr lower = compensate upper
- Extr upper = don’t necessarily take upper
When should 6’s ideally be extracted (if indicated to do so)?
- Furcation of 7’s forming
- 8’s present
- Class I or ave OB
- Moderate crowding
When and how should canines be assessed?
10yrs onwards
- Visual
- Palpate
- Radiographs
What are the interceptive treatment options for class III?
- Growth modification (functional appliance)
- Camouflage (removable appliance)
What are the interceptive treatment options for class II?
- Growth modification (function/ headgear)
