UQ Flashcards
Differentiate the terms Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS), sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock (4 marks).
For four additional marks, give additional relevant information – e.g., give examples, list criteria or describe clinical signs.
SIRS is a systemic inflammatory response to a variety of clinical insults. Defined by two or more abnormal: temperature, respiratory rate, heart rate and peripheral leukocyte count.
Sepsis is SIRS caused by infection (bacteraemia, fungaemia, parasitaemia, viraemia).
Severe sepsis is associated with organ dysfunction, hypoperfusion and hypotension. Hypoperfusion, or perfusion abnormalities, may include lactic acidosis, oliguria or an acute alteration in mental status.
Septic shock is sepsis with hypoperfusion, despite adequate fluid rescuitation. Along with hypoperfusion, or perfusion abnormalities, may include lactic acidosis, oliguria or an acute alteration in mental status.
