UNDF Mock GIT CBE Flashcards
A 38 year old free-range poultry farmer who was diagnosed with hepatitis C in her teenage years presents to her GP. An electron micrograph of hepatitis C virus is shown:
Describe the structure of the hepatitis C virus particle. (2 marks)
Feedback: Dark urine, pale stool, scratch marks plus deep jaundice = obstructuve jaundice. In the context of obstructive jaundice, epigastric mass most probably is due to Ca head of pancreas, +ve Murphy’s sign raises the possibility of gallbladder disease and stone impaction in CBD, liver cirrhosis does not usually cause obstructive jaundice and if it happens this signifies an extensive inflammation to the liver, canaliculi, and the intrahepatic part of CBD due to severe hepatitis. In liver cirrhosis remember to consider liver function and what to expect to be deranged, then what signs and symptoms result from that. Hepatoceullular carcinoma is highly preventable in patients with long-standing hepatitis C.
Common bile duct. Hepatic portal vein.
