Upper Urinary Tract Obstruction Important Terms Flashcards
obstructive uropathy
anatomic changes in the urinary system cause by obstruction
postobstructive diuresis
rapid excretion of large amounts of water, sodium, or other electrolytes, resulting in urine output of 10L/day or more after upper urinary tract obstruction is removed
kidney stone (calculi or nephrolithiasis)
masses of crystals, protein, or other substances that are a common cause of urinary tract obstruction in adults
supersaturation
the presence of a higher concentration of salt within a fluid than the volume of the fluid is able to dissolve to maintain equilibrium
crystallization
the process by which crystals grow from a small nucleus, or nidus, to larger stones in the presence of supersaturated urine
matrix
organic material (ie mucoprotein) in which the components of a kidney stone are embedded
