what is included in/considered as Bloodborne Pathogens?
any pathogenic microorganism that is present in human blood can cause disease in humans, includes HBV, and HIV, TB, MRSA, VRE and CDiff
what are the precautions and procedures surrounding the disposal of needles?
avoid needle sticks, never bend a needle, never re cap a needle, place sharps in an appropriate puncture resistant, leak-proof container immediately after use, containers must be easy to reach
What is considered personal protective equipment?
gloves, mask, gowns, aprons, lab coats, faceshields, protective eyewear, mouthpieces, resuscitation bags or other ventilation devices
What is the definition of Universal Precautions and know what specifically these precautions apply to?
method utilize to control and prevent exposures to blood or other potentially infectious materials. “treats all blood and certain body fluids as a possible source of contamination and infection.”
What are the methods of using and disposing of personal protective equipment?
- you must be trained to use equipment properly
- must be appropriate for the task
- equipment must be free of physical flaws that could compromise safety
- your gloves must fit properly
- if, when wearing equipment, it is penetrated by blood or other potentially infections materials, remove it as soon as feasible
- before leaving the work area, remove all PPE and place it in the designated area or container for washing, decontamination or disposal.
What is the proper procedure for dealing with broken glass?
DO NOT pick up broken glass, use tongs, forceps or a brush or dust pan
