BACK DISORDER Flashcards
What is the most common cause of low back pain?
soft tissue strain
common problem - poor posture in daily activities
proper body mechanics and be able to determine these from case examples
A void quick, and Jerky movements
Change position or split up task into enough steps to avoid excessive strain
D o not twist or rotate torso when lifting of carrying objects
Face the object and the direction of movement
Keep back in its normal, vertical alignment with natural curves, avoid asymmetrical postures
Keep objects and work surface close to the body
Lift using the leg muscles, not the back muscle
Stand with broad base of support
Use abdominal muscle not the back muscle
When lifting an object from the inside of a container pr the trunk o a car, place one foot on the edge of the container or on the car bumper to get the necessary leverage to lift the object
When standing for long periods of time, elevate one foot on a small stool or step
What are the abnormal curvatures of the back that create back disorders?
- Lordosis - forward curve of Lumbar spine
- Scoliosis - lateral “S” curve of spine
- Kyphosis - abnormal curve of Thoracic spine
What is TLSO and when its use?
Thoracic Lumbar Sacral Orthotic - A TLSO (thoracic-lumbar-sacral orthosis) is a brace that provides support for your spine and keeps it from moving12. It may be used for conditions like scoliosis, herniated discs, compression fractures, trauma, surgery, or seating posture3. You should follow your doctor’s instructions on when and how to use your TLSO.
How to Donn a TLSO?
1) While laying down, patient rolls on side
2) With: the concave side of the brace toward the patients back, the point of the brace towards the patient’s head, the curve of the brace over the patients hop , the lower side of the brace is lid/pushed under the patient until the brace is centered on the patients back (the middle of the brace should be in line with the patients spine)
3) Patient rolls onto other side to allow assistant to further center the brace.
4) Patient rolls onto back
5) Front part of brace is placed on patients stomach with the point facing down and flat part up
6) front part of brace goes over back portion
7) Line up curves of back and front portion
8) Pull straps from bottom over top and thread through buckles on other side
9) Pull tight and fasten
- Know/determine ADL methods using proper body mechanics
