Units of Measurment Flashcards
Picogram (pg)
A picogram is one-trillionth of a gram
EU
Endotoxin is measured in endotoxin units
IU
An international unit (IU) is an internationally accepted amount of a substance. This measure is used for fat-soluble vitamins (such as vitamins A, D and E) and certain hormones, enzymes, and biologicals (such as vaccines).
μ
stands for micro (millionth)
μm
micrometer: one millionth of a metre
MEq
The milliequivalent (mEq) is the unit of measure often used for electrolytes 1 mEq = 1 mg of hydrogen (1 mole)
Mole (mol)
mole, also spelled mol, in chemistry, a standard scientific unit for measuring large quantities of very small entities such as atoms, molecules, or other specified particles.
The mole designates an extremely large number of units, 6.02214076 × 1023
Mmol
The amount of a substance equal to a thousandth of a mole (a measure of the amount of a substance). Also called millimole.
pH
As this diagram shows, pH ranges from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. pHs less than 7 are acidic while pHs greater than 7 are alkaline (basic). Link to illustration.
mL
a unit of capacity equal to one thousandth of a liter
CFU
colony-forming unit (CFU or cfu) is a measure of viable bacterial or fungal cells. In direct microscopic counts (cell counting using haemocytometer) where all cells, dead and living, are counted, but CFU measures only viable cells
Deciliter (dL)
a metric unit of capacity, equal to one tenth of a liter
