unit6 vocab test Flashcards
epidemiology
The science of tracking the instances or pattern of diseases
chronic
Long-term, developing gradually with lesser symptoms, usually causing more permanent damage
Acute
Short term, with extreme symptoms
Communicable
infections that can be spread from one person to another
Comorbidity
two or more coexisting but unrelated medical conditions
complication
New additional (secondary) problems arising after an original disease begins.
Diagnosis or Diagnoses
Identification of a specific disease via evaluation of signs and symptoms
Diagnostic test or Diagnostic tests
Laboratory tests that assist in diagnosing a specific disease
epidemic
outbreaks of disease that occur over a given area, with many cases of the disease
etiology
the causative factors of a particular disease
idiopathic
when the cause of illness or disease is unknown
iatrogenic
when a treatment, procedure, or error is responsible for an illness/disease
exacerbation
increased signs of disease
latent
an initial “silent disease stage, in which no clinical signs are evident
lesion
a specific local change in tissue that may be microscopic or highly visible
occurrence
the tracking of a disease by number of new cases and prevalence (number of existing cases)
predisposing factor
those that indicate a high risk for a disease but not certain development
Probability
the likelihood that something will occur
prodromal
the time in early disease development when a patient is aware of nonspecific change in the body
Prognosis
the likelihood for recovery or other outcomes
recovery
Period of recuperation or convalescence and return to normal health
remission
subsiding disease symptoms, when signs and symptoms of a disease are no longer evident
Sequelae
potential unwanted outcomes of a primary condition
sign or signs
objective indicators of disease that are obvious to others
subacute
state of disease that is “in the middle” of the process:; it has a rather recent onset or relatively rapid change
subclinical
a state existing in some pathologic conditions wherein no obvious clinical developments occur
symptom or symptoms
subjective feelings of disease or condition
