Two functions of the auditory system:
Sense of hearing, sense of equilibrium
Presbycusis
Age related loss of hearing
What is Conductive hearing loss?
Hearing loss due to problems with the ear canal, ear drum, or middle ear and its little bones. Any obstruction of the ear canal; any problems with the outer ear. Can be fixed when obstruction is corrected.
What is Sensory Neural hearing loss?
Problems with the inner ear. Nerve related hearing loss; gradual deterioration. Usually can only be corrected wit hearing aids.
What is mixed loss of hearing?
Usually caused by damage in the outer or middle ear, and in the inner ear or auditory nerve.
Tinnitus
High pitched buzzing
Diagnostic Tests for hearing loss:
Whisper test
Otoscope exam
Tympanogram
Tuning fork (Rinne Weber Tests)
