Unit Two - Enumerative Induction Flashcards
Enumerative induction
a form of inductive reasoning where we infer the presence of a relevant property in a target population from the presence of this property in a sample population.
relevant property
the feature that is of interest in a case of
enumerative induction.
target population
the category of individuals about which an
enumerative induction is drawing a conclusion.
sample population
the selection of the target popular which is
described in the premise of an enumerative induction.
Statistics
tool that allows researchers to quantify the strength of their enumerative inductions, on the basis of the size of their sample and target populations.
Margins of error
indicating a breadth of possible values that the relevant
property could have in the target population, given their findings.
Confidence level
indicating how confident their results are, given the sizes of their sample and target populations.
Sampling methodologies
are ways of selecting a sample population, meant to
minimize the changes that it is an unrepresentative sample.
random sampling
to have been selected from the target population at large, rather than from only a particular subset of it.
