Unit I superficial structures of neck Flashcards
Platysma origin
superficial fascia of pectoralis major and deltoids
platysma insertion
lower border of mandible and angle of mouth
platysma nerve
cervical branch of facial nerve (CN VII)
platysma function
depresses mandible and draws down corner of mouth
Sternoceidomastoid origin
sternal head of front of manubrium, clavicular head from medial 1/3 of clavicle
sternocleidomastoid insertion
lateral surface of mastoid process, lateral half of superior nuchal line
sternocleidomastoid nerve
Acessory nerve (CN 11)
sternocleidomastoid function
chief flexor of head
What is torticollis?
a pathological contraction of the SCM leaving the head tilted forward and away from affected side
Describe type I toricollis
it is congenital and results from fibrous tissue tumor at or shortly after birth
Describe type II torticollis
(muscular torticollis) due to injury at birth
Describe type III torticollis
(Spasmadic) it’s in adults; due to abnormal tonicity; has good response to chiro care
Trapezius origin
EOP, ligamentum nuchae, and spinous processes of C7-T12
Trapezius insertion
lateral 1/3 of clavicle, spine of scapula, and acromion process
Trapezius nerve
acessory nerve (CN XI), and C3-4 from cervical plexus
Trapezius function
upper part elevates, middle retracts, and lower depresses scapula
What vein drains the face and scalp and also contains cerebral blood?
the external jugular vein
Just below the parotid gland, what two veins form the external jugular vein?
the retromandibular, and posterior auricular vein
As the external jugular vein runs along the lateral surface of the SCM, what vein does it empty into?
the subclavian vein
List the tributarie veins of the external jugular vein
1 retromandibular 2 posterior auricular 3 posterior external jugular 4 anterior jugular 5 transverse cervical 6 suprascalpular
In congestive heart failure or obstruction of superior vena cava, this vein becomes prominent
external jugular vein
Examples of individuals who develop prominent external jugular veins due to increases intrathoracic pressure during singing and playing
opera singers and bagpipers
Describe the location of the superficial cervical lymph nodes
they’re found along the external jugular vein, superficial to the SCM
