What is the RAMSAR Convention
International treaty, provides framework for conservation of wetlands - site is protected under legislation - notification as SSSI
What is the BERN Convention
- conserve and wildplants and animals as well as natural habitats
- give special protection to most vulnerable and threatened species
What is the definition of contaminated land
According to EPA 1990: as being any land that is causing or could cause significant harm or pollution of controlled waters
Remediation methods for contaminated land
Source-pathway-target
- create barrier between source and target
- remove source
- treat the pollutant
Examples or methods used for clean up
- physical methods: dig and dump
- biological methods: bioremediation; bioconcentration
- chemical methods: solidification; treat with chemicals to neutralize
