Authoritarian
Used to describe a system characterized by a strong central power and limited political interactions. Political authority is concentrated within the hands of a single leader or small group.
Autocracy
Rule by one person with unlimited power
Comparative Case Study
A method for studying and classifying societies. It is used to establish more general conclusions. It relies on case analyzes that have been structured so as to enable structured comparisons.
Coup D’etat
A forceible overthrow of government by the military
Military Dictatorship
An undemocratic government run by the military
Party Dictatorship
: A undemocratic political system that is controlled by one party. The most familiar examples are found in communist political systems.
Personal Dictatorship
An undemocratic government dominated by a single individual. Saddam Hussiens Iraq is an example.
Theocratic Dictatorship
An undemocratic state run by religious elites.
Direct Democracy
A political system where citizens directly participate in decision-making processes, without intermediaries like elected representatives. People vote on laws and policies, making collective decisions on public matters.
Methodology
Refers to a wide body of specific methods that scholars use to collect, analyze, and interpret evidence
Plebiscite
A vote in which the entire electorate is asked to approve or reject a specific questions; for example, whether the current president should be elected for life.
Recall
A procedure that allows citizens to remove representatives from office. By gaining a sufficient number of signatures on a petition, citizens can require that their representative seek re-election before the representative’s term is over.
Referendum
A vote by citizens on a particular issue or law
Regime
The broadest class of political system, it encompasses the bases of the systems legitimacy; how and to whom government is accountable, and what its governmental institutions are.
Authoritarian Regime
Non-democratic governing systems that feature absolute rule over the population. People are prevented from choosing their government and influencing its decisions.
