Unit 8: Exchange and Transport Flashcards
Where does gas exchange occur in humans?
In the alveoli of the lungs.
What is the function of the alveoli?
To provide a large surface area for gas exchange.
How is oxygen transported in the blood?
Bound to hemoglobin in red blood cells.
How is carbon dioxide removed from the body?
It diffuses out of the blood into the alveoli and is exhaled.
How do plants exchange gases?
Through stomata on their leaves.
What controls the opening and closing of stomata?
Guard cells.
Why is a thin exchange surface important in gas exchange?
It reduces the diffusion distance.
What happens to stomata during the day?
They open to allow gas exchange for photosynthesis.
How does a rich blood supply aid gas exchange in humans?
It maintains a concentration gradient for oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Why do plants need gas exchange at night?
For respiration when photosynthesis is not occurring.
