Plant Structures and Functions Flashcards
What does the xylem transport?
Water and minerals.
What does the phloem transport?
Sugars (sucrose) from leaves to other parts of the plant.
What is translocation?
Movement of sugars in the phloem.
What is transpiration?
Movement of water through the plant, driven by evaporation.
How do guard cells control stomata?
By opening or closing them depending on water availability.
Why are leaves broad?
To provide a large surface area for light absorption.
How is water absorbed by roots?
Through osmosis.
What is the function of root hair cells?
To increase the surface area for water and mineral absorption.
Why is the stomata closed at night?
To reduce water loss when photosynthesis is not occurring.
How does temperature affect transpiration?
Higher temperatures increase the rate.
