Unit 8- electrolysis Flashcards
What is an electrolysis
breaking down of an ionic compound in a molten or aqueous state using electric current
In which state is the ionic compound in during the electrolysis
melted ( molton ) , dissolved in water ( aqueous )
what is positive electrode called
anode
what is negative electrode called
cathode
What is formed at the cathode
If the metal ion is more reactive than hydrogen, then hydrogen is formed. If metal ion is less reactive than hydrogen, then metal is formed.
What is formed at the anode
If it is concentrated and contains halide ions then halide ion will form. If halide solution is dilute or does not contain halide then oxygen is formed.
The propertiesies of electrode
should be inert and conduct electricity
At cathode (reduction/oxidation) happens
reduction
At anode ( reduction/oxidation) happens
oxidation
What is a brine
a concentrated solution of sodium chloride
Why is there a membrane in electrolysis of brine
to separate the products
Product of electrolysis of brine
chlorine, hydrogen, sodium chloride
To refine a copper the impure copper should be in anode or cathode
anode
The electrolyte in the electroplating should be ________
the solution of a soluble compound of metal X
What is electroplating
using electricity to coat one metal with another, to prevent corrosion.
