Unit 14 - making use of metals Flashcards
What is a bauxite
Aluminium oxide
Which method is used to extract very reactive metal from its ore
electrolysis
A disadvantage of electrolysis
Expensive
What is zinc blende
zinc sulfide, ZnS
a word equation of extraction of iron ore
iron (iii) oxide + carbon monoxide = iron + carbon dioxide
How is zinc extracted from zinc blende
It is roasted in air to produced zinc oxide and sulfur dioxide. Then zinc oxide is reacted with carbon monoxide to form zinc and carbon dioxide
What is hematite
Iron ore
What is in the charge ( the mixture)
Iron ore, limestone , coke
What is coke ( not drink )
pure carbon ( coal )
Describe the reactions in the blast furnace
The coke is burned in the air to produce carbon dioxide and heat.
carbon dioxide is reacted with even more carbon to produce carbon monoxide
Then iron (iii) oxide is reacted with carbon monoxide to form iron and carbon dioxide.
What are the wasted gases in the blast furnace
Carbon dioxide and nitrogen
how is limestone used for during the process of extraction of iron
Limestone is broken down into calcium oxide and carbon dioxide by the heat of the furnace. Then calcium oxide reacts with the sand to form a slag( calcium silicate ) so that it removes impurities in the iron ore.
What kind of anode and cathode are used in the electrolysis of aluminium
carbon
The aluminium ore is dissolved in ________ during electrolysis
Molten cryolite
The overall reaction of electrolysis of aluminium
aluminium oxide = aluminium + oxygen
Uses for aluminium
cooking foil, drinking cans
Uses for copper
electrical wiring
Uses of zinc
galvanising
What is brass
alloy of copper and zinc
Which substances are mixed with iron to form stainless steel
nickel and chromium
Effect of amount of carbon content in the steel
A little carbon make steel stronger but too much make it brittle
Why do alloy has a different property
A new atom enters the lattice so that the layers can no longer slide easily. This makes the alloy stronger than the original metal
how is zinc removed after the extraction from zinc blende to zinc
fractional distillation
how is steel made
molten iron is poured into basic oxygen converter
the oxygen reacts with the carbon and sulfur to form CO2 and SO2
the gases goes off reacts with phosphorus to form phosphorus (V) oxide ( P2O5)
calcium oxide is added to react with silicon and phosphorus (V) oxide.
this gives a slag which is skimmed off
what enters at the bottom of the blast furnace
blast of hot air
what leavesat the bottom of the blas furnace
molton iron
