the geographic movement of African Americans as a result of WWII. What impact did the (Second) Great Migration have on America?
From 1910 to 1940, many blacks from the south moved up north for the job opportunities left from the previous men who had left for war effort.
How did the war lay the groundwork for changes to gender norms and a feminist movement in the 60s?
The war’s labor shortage benefited women during this time to take jobs that were once considered only for men. As time started to pass gender norms changed leading to the feminist movements in support of women’s ability to work.
Why does Brinkley say that WWII forced Americans to reexamine their cultural and racial assumptions “in a way more painful and direct than any time since the Civil War?”
The assumptions over foreign individuals in the US were forced to change as the growing population of different races lead to multiculturalism, changing the relations between the people as the country’s economy, culture, politics, and intellectual life changes.
What is the “fear” that many had about the economy after WWII?
Many feared that the economic growth after the war ended wouldn’t be the same.
How did WWII affect the problem of the Great Depression/transform the American economy? Give specific figures.
It expanded industrial production in the US. Leading to many new jobs created, helping the massive unemployment and underproduction. New jobs were created, national gross product increased, and personal income increased.
How did WWII “transform” the way that liberals saw the role of the federal government over the economy?
The war changed the way people saw government interference in management and control. People saw that government spending would solve the problem to plan a way for the economy postwar to thrive.
What was the main idea of Plessy v. Ferguson (1896)?
Separate but equal (the legal foundation for jim crow era)
-Plessy in 1892 purchased a train ticket and sat on the whites only side on purpose. He was arrested for violating the 1890 law (Lousisana railways required to have separate but equal causes for white and block passengers).
-He petitioned the court stating that it violated the 14th amendment right.
-The court decided the racial segregation of facilities was lawful and proving the same facilities was equal.
-Leading to segregation being the new norm (schools,water foundation transportation, restrooms and all public facilities were equal but racially separated).
What was the main idea of Brown vs. Topeka Board of Education (1954)?
Schools were unequal and violated the 14th amendment right. Even separated, black schools had lack of resources and no funding for improvement.
-The court stated that assuming equal between schools, separation is a violation to the equal protection clause
