Why was the Compromise of 1850 needed?
It was needed when California wanted to become a free state, this made southerns freak out about the beginning of anti-slavery.
Why didn’t the Compromise of 1850 “fix” the issue of slavery?
A stronger Fugitive Slave act caused an outcry in the North.
What motive did the Fugitive state law give whites to capture supposed runaway slaves?
It allowed them to receive financial awards for capturing slaves and returning slaves to their alleged owners.
What additional measures did the FSA create to ensure the law would be followed even by those who didn’t support slavery?
To those who didn’t support slavery. The law imposed fines of $1,000 and give up to six months of imprisonment.
How did Northern sates like MA, feel abt the passage of the stronger Fugitive Slave law? what did they do in response?
Ppl in the north opposed of they law bc they believed it was a violation to the basic human rights and supported the institution of slavery. In response, they passed personal liberty laws that made it difficult for slaves to be captured.
What is “personal liberty law?”
Laws passed by Northern government to protect free African Americans and counteracted the FSL, making it harder to enforce.
In 1852, what did the Whgs say about the Compromise of 1850?
They said that they support it as the final settlement of the issue of slavery in new territories. They want to enforce and discourage any further debate abt it.
What happened to the Whigs after 1852?
They spilt, calling it the “collapse of the second party system.” Many whigs fled to other parties which aligned to the other issues they favored.

Why in theory should our nation not even be discussing whether they are a slave or free state at all?
The Missouri compromise, 36’30 parallel. States above were meant to be. free and the states below were slave sates.
(KA-NA act) Why was senator Douglas focused on adding Nebraska to the us as a state?
He wanted to build the railroad along the northern route that would go through Chicago and Nebraska territories.
How did senator Douglas ease the southerners opposition to Nebraska?
An amendment was added to repeal the Missouri compromise and created new teritories… Kansas and Nebraska.
Why did many Northerners object the KA-NA act?
They objected they law because it would override the Missouri compromise and it extends slavery into new territories.
