passive surveillance
data are acquired from other primary sources and have been derived fro other purposes
ex. collecting data on lab samples sent into a lab for testing
active data collection
data is actively searched for and collected for the goal of surveillance
ex. sampling retail meats for pathogens
Lab based surveillance
data produced in clinical or public labs,
can detect changes in the presence or behavior of pathogens, and the evaluate the impact of prevention and control measures
Sentinel surveillance
used individual and population health indicator that are available before confirmed diagnoses or lab confirmation
useful to identifying disease clusters in an outbreak before disgnosis are confirmed and reported

Social media surveillance
monitors rends on populat internet and spcial media sites and look for common words
outbreak investigations step
