Experimental studies: lab experiments
looks at disease in a controlled, clinical environment to assess a chemotherapeutic agent on a disease or condition
total control over challenge/exposure and the envrionemnt
Experimental studies: field experiments
deals with subjects who are disease gree and aim to evaluate whether an agent or procedure reduces the risk of developing disease among thoes free from that condition
little contort over the challenge and the environment
control groups positive vs. negative
negative control group: is the intervention better than nothing?
positive control group: is a new intervention better than the old intervention
complete randomized design
all individuals are randomly assigned to treatment or control group
cross-over designs
each subject spends time in treatment and control group
wish bias
introduced by the tendency of paitents or investigators to fit data or info into person scheme of how they believe thing ought to be
placebo effect
differential admission bias
a form of slection bias where paitients with certain characterisitcs are more likely to be admitted
