Unit 8 Flashcards
Point Source
Pollutants that enter the environment from an easily identified and confined space
Examples: CAFO, Emissions from smokestack of a coal power plant, BP Oil Spill
Non-Point Source
Pollutants entering the environment from many places at once.
Examples: Pesticides from agricultural practices and Urban Runoff
Urban Runoff includes…?
Motor Oil, Nitrate Fertilizer, Road Salt, Sediments
Estuaries and Bays are polluted by…
Non-Point sources from the large watersheds that empty into them
Pollutants
Specific Chemical/Groups of chemicals from specific sources with specific environment + human health effects
Pollution
Vague, non-descriptive term for any substance that is harmful to the environment
Exceptions: Thermal, Noise, Sediment Pollution
Identify some sublethal effects an organism can suffer if a pollutant or environmental condition in its ecosystem exceeds its range of tolerance
- Limit growth
- Limited reproductive function
- Difficulty respiring (breathing), potentially asphyxiation
- Hormonal disruption
Ex: Coral
Explain the process of coral bleaching
Coral loses color & become stressed and vulnerable to disease without algae (Main Food Source)
