U3: 3.6 Flashcards
Age Structure Diagrams
Define the term Age Cohort
Groups of similarily aged individuals.
Identify the three key age cohorts used for interpreting age structure diagrams.
0-14 (pre-reproductive), 15-44 (reproductive age), 45+ (post-reproductive)
Explain what an age-structure diagram with a larger portion of individuals in the pre-reproductive age cohort than any other cohort can tell you about the population.
Can tell you that the population is expanding rapidly. because there is current rapid growth and there will be future growth. (Extreme Pyramid shape)
Explain what an age structure diagram with a slightly larger pre-reproductive age cohort than reproductive age cohort can tell you about the population.
Tells you that the population is expanding slowly because there is current stable growth and there will be future growth. (Pyramid shape)
Explain what an age structure diagram with roughly equal pre-reproductive and reproductive age cohorts can tell you about the population.
Tells you that it is a stable population, because there is a slight growth rate/stable population. (House/Empire state building shape)
Explain what an age structure diagram with a greater proportion of individuals in reproductive and post-reproductive age cohorts than pre-reproductive age cohorts can tell you about the population.
Tells you that it is a declining population. because there are less pre-reproductive (young people) to promote population growth. (Ice cream cone shape)
