U2: 2.4 Flashcards
Describe Ecological Service
Range of conditions such as temperature, salinity, pH, or sunlight that an organisms can endure before injury or death results
Describe whom has a range of tolerance
SPECIES and INDIVIDUAL organisms both have a range of tolerance for all the different environmental conditions of their habitat
Example of ecological service
Salmon have a basic range of tolerance for temperature 6 C too 22 C. But some individual salmon have adaptions that give them a range of tolerance outside the basic range for the species
Explain the example
•due to genetic diversity
•makes populations of salmon are more resistant to disturbances, like global warming.
Describe Optimal Range
Where organisms survive, grow, and reproduce
Describe Zone of Physiological Stress
The range where organisms survive, but experience solar stress such as infertility, lack of growth, decreased activity, etc.
Describe Zone of Intolerance
The range where the organism will die
Example of Zone of Intolerance
thermal shock, suffocation, lack of food/water/oxygen
Describe Fundamental Niche
The suite of abiotic conditions under which a species CAN survive, grow and reproduce
Describe Realized Niche
The range of abiotic and biotic conditions under which a species ACTUALLY lives.
Example of Fundamental Niche
Chthamalus barnacles can live in both deep/shallow intertidal zones.
Example of Realized Niche
Competition from Balanus narrows Chthalamus’s spatial range, forcing it to occupy a higher, drier zone.
