Unit 8 Flashcards
What is a Coulomb?
amount of charge that passes a point per second when there is a current of one amp (1 A).
What is Kirchoff’s first law?
At any junction, The total current leaving the junction is equal to the total current entering the junction
What is the equation for current using charge and time.
I=Q/t
What way does conventional current flow?
Positive to negative
What way does current flow in electron current?
Negative to positive
What is the difference between electron flow and conventional current?
Conventional current flows from positive to negative whereas electron flow the current goes from negative to positive.
How will electric current be produced if one end of the wire is negative and the other positive?
A metal wire has a lattice structure of positive ions that can’t move but can vibrate. As one end is positive and the other negative the electrons will be repelled by the negative end but attracted to the positive end.
What are electrolytes?
liquids that can carry electric charges and currents.
What does current depend on?
- Speed at which charged particles are moving
- Charge they are carrying
- Number of charge particles that are moving
What is drift velocity?
The average speed the particle travels at along the conductor
What is number density?
The number of free electrons per unit volume.
What quantity is conserved according to Kirchhoff’s first law?
Charge
