Unit 24 - Particle Physics Flashcards
What are considered as fundamental particles?
Quarks, Electrons and Neutrinos
What is antimatter?
- It has the same mass as its particles pair but has an opposite charge
- When particle and antiparticle meet each other go through destructive process of annihilation
What is the process of annihilation?
masses of the pair (particle and antiparticle) are converted into high energy pair of photons
What is the antiparticle of an electron?
Positron
What is the antiparticle of a proton?
Antiproton
What is the antiparticle of a neutron?
Antineutron
What is the antiparticle of a neutrino?
Antineutrino
What are hadrons?
Particles and antiparticles that are affected by strong nuclear forces, hadrons if charged also experience electromagnetic force. Hadrons decay by the weak nuclear force. (Protons, neutrons and mesons.
What are Leptons?
Particles and antiparticles that are not affected by the strong nuclear force, if charged the experience electromagnetic force. (Electrons, neutrinos and muons).
What are the building blocks of matter?
Quarks with Leptons
What quarks are protons made up of?
2 ups, one down
What quarks does a neutron have?
Two downs, one up
What is a Baryon?
Particles made up of 3 quarks, e.g. proton, neutron
