Unit ……. Flashcards
What is an electron volt?
Amount of kinetic energy gained by a single unbound electron when it accelerated through an electrostatic potential difference of one volt.
What is plank’s constant
6.63x10^-34 JS
What is ionisation?
When an atom loses an orbiting electron.
What is excitation?
An electron is raised to a higher level but remains within atom.
What is meant by the term ground state?
Lowest energy level of an atom
What does an excited state mean?
When one or more of an atom’s electrons moves to an outer shell at higher energy. An energy input raise the electrons to a higher energy level.
What is a photon?
A photon is a particle of electro-magnetic radiation, the energy of which is directly proportional to its frequency.
