Unit 4 Flashcards
What is the moment of a force?
Force x the perpendicular distance from the turning point to the line of action of the force.
What unit is the moment of force?
Nm (Newton meter)
What is needed for equilibrium?
- Resultant force acting on the body must be zero.
- Principle of moments must apply about any point on the body (resultant moment is zero).
What is the centre of mass?
The point through which a single force on the body has no turning effect.
What is the principle of moments?
Sum of anti-clockwise moments = sum of clockwise moments
What is a couple?
A pair of equal and opposite forces acting on a body, but not along the same line.
What is the equation for the total moment of a couple?
Fx+F(d-x)=Fd
What is a torque?
Another name for total moment of a couple.
One of the forces x the perpendicular distance between the forces.
What is pressure?
Force perpendicular to the area / area
What does archimedes principle state?
The weight of the fluid displace by the object = the upthrust of the liquid on the object
What is work?
Force x distance moved in the direction of the force
Scalar quantity
What does the area under a force distance graph represent?
Work done
