Unit 7 - Skeletal Muscle Tissue Flashcards
List the 3 types of muscle tissue
Skeletal
Cardiac
Smooth
Describe the connective tissue coverings of a skeletal muscle
An individual skeletal muscle is made up of muscle fibers wrapped in a connective tissue covering. Each muscle is surrounded by the epimysium. Fascia surrounds and separates the muscles.
What is deep fascia?
The portion of the network of the fasciae that surrounds and penetrates the muscles
What is subcutaneous fascia?
The portion that lies just beneath the skin forming the subcutaneous layer
What is subsereous fascia?
The portion that forms the connective tissue layer of the serous membranes covering organs in various body cavities and lining those cavities
What is a tendon?
A projection of connective tissue beyond the ends of the muscle that attaches to bone
What is an aponeurosis?
A broad fibrous sheet of connective tissue that connects muscles to adjacent muscles
List the 6 major parts of a skeletal muscle fiber
Sarcolemma Sarcoplasm Myofibrils Sarcomere Sarcoplasmic reticulum Transverse tubules
What is sarcolemma?
A muscle fiber’s cell membrane
What is sarcoplasm?
A muscle fiber’s cytoplasm
What are myofibrils?
The numerous, threadlike proteins that lie parallel to one another and are contained in the sarcoplasm
What is a sarcomere?
The segment of the myofibril between two successive Z lines; causes the muscle fiber to appear striated
What is sarcoplasmic reticulum?
The network of membranous channels that surround each myofibril running parallel to them; the specific name for the endoplasmic reticulum
What are transverse tubules?
The invaginations of the fiber’s sarcoplasm that extend inward and pass completely through the fiber
Describe a neuromuscular junction
Each skeletal muscle fiber is controlled by a motor neuron attached at the NMJ
What is a motor unit?
A motor neuron and the muscle fibers it controls
How do the numbers of fibers within a motor unit affect muscular contractions?
The fewer the muscle fibers, the more precise the movements
Explain the function of a neurotransmitter substance
Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers. The role of the neurotransmitter is to carry messages from one neuron to another - through ‘carrying messages’
Describe the 4 major events that occur when a muscle fiber contract
- Motor neuron releases neurotransmitter causing a release of calcium ions
- Calcium binds to troponin causing it to move tropomyosin away from binding sites on actin filaments
- Myosin cross bridges attach to actin filaments
- Cross bridges pull actin inward by bending
Define threshold stimulus
A muscle fiber remains unresponsive until a certain amount of stimulus is applied. This minimal strength required is called the threshold stimulus
Explain all-or-none response
A muscle fiber either contracts completely or not at all
Describe treppe or the staircase effect
Muscle tension increases in a graded manner. The muscle contractions become more efficient.
