unit 7: podiatric dermatology Flashcards
define Tinea Pedis
tinea pedis is a contagious fungal infection that affects the skin on the pedal aspect and sometimes spreads to toenails or hands
define Tinea Pedis
it is a contagious fungal infection that affects the skin on the plantar aspect of the foot and can spread to toenails and sometimes the hands
who (gender and age) are more prone to Tinea Pedis
it is common in males and prevalence increases with age
name 3 dermatophyte species that cause it
trichophyton rubrum, trichophyton mentagrophytes
epidermophyton floccosum
name 2 non-dermatophyte species that cause it
scytalidium dimidiatum and scytolidium hyalinum
describe 5 causes of Tinea Pedis
1.sharing of footwear with already infected people
2.swimming and communal bathing
3.a hot,humid and tropical environment
4.occlusive (closed) footwear that causes hyperhidrosis (sweating) & Maceration (lighter and wrinkly skin)
5.poor foot hygiene
what causes maceration
maceration is caused by wearing occlusive (closed) footwear and skin becomes in contact with moisture for too long
define dermatophyte
dermatophyte is fungi that requires keratin to grow
what is keratin
keratin is a protein in epithelial cells that forms rthe outer layer of the skin
explain the pathophysiology (physiological process of a disease) of dermatophytes in Tinea Pedis
1.dermatophytes invade the superficial keratin using keratinase
2.dermatophyte cell walls contain mannans which inhibits the body’s immune response
3.mannans reduce keratinocyte proliferation, resulting in a decreased rate of sloughing (shredding old dead skin to replace with new skin cells) and a chronic state of infection (Tinea Pedis) occurs
what are the clinical features
itching, stinging burning sensation and presence of associated dermatophyte infections
what are 3 associated dermatophyte infections
1.onychomycosis (fungal infection on toe nails)
2.tinea cruris (fungal infection on skin of genitals, inner thighs and buttocks
3.tinea manuum (fungal infection of the hands)
is tinea pedis asymetric or symetric
asymetric- doesnt occur on both sides the same way
what are the subtypes and explain them
