Unit 7 Mitosis & Meiosis Flashcards
What is chromatin?
Uncoiled DNA found in the nucleus
What are the two types of cell division?
Mitosis and meiosis
What is chromatid?
One half of a duplicated chromosome
What is centromere?
the structure that hold together the chromatids
What are the five phases of mitosis?
Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telephase, cytokinesis
What occurs in prophase for mitosis?
Nucleus disappears, centrioles migrate, spindles begin to form, and chromosomes become visible
What occurs in metaphase for mitosis?
Chromosomes line up at cell equator
What occurs in anaphase for mitosis?
Duplicated chromosomes separate and head to opposite poles of the cell
What occurs in telophase for mitosis?
Chromosomes reach opposite poles, nucleus reforms
What occurs in cytokinesis for mitosis?
Division of cytoplasm & organelles into the two daughter cells
How many chromosomes do humans have? How many pairs?
46, 22
What does meiosis produce?
Gametes (sex cells)
What is zygote?
The union of 2 sex cells (egg & sperm)
What are diploids? Haploids?
having two sets of chromosomes, having one set of chromosomes
What does meiosis produce?
Haploid gametes (one set of chromosomes)
