Unit 3 Cells Flashcards
What is the cell walls function?
Provides protection for plant cells, it is made out of cellulose
What is the plasma membranes function?
To regulate what goes in and out of the cell
What does the nucleus do and what is inside of it?
Controls the activity of the cell, and the nucleolus makes the ribosomes inside of the nucleus
What do ribosomes do?
They are where proteins are made, found in cytosol or on endoplasmic reticulum
What is cytosol?
Clear gel inside of cell, holds organelles in place
What is the cytoskeleton?
The framework inside of cytosol
What is the endoplasmic reticulum?
A transport system throughout the cell
What does the smooth ER do? What does the rough ER do?
Makes lipids, makes proteins
What does the Golgi apparatus do?
it sorts, packages, and transports proteins throughout cell
What is the function of vesicles?
To take packaged materials from the Golgi apparatus and transport them to other parts of the cell
What do vacuoles do?
They store cell materials, mostly in plant cells
What do chloroplasts do?
Photosynthesis, and only in plant cells
What does the mitochondria do?
Cellular respiration
What are lysosomes?
Specialized vesicles that digest food, bacteria, viruses, and worn out cell parts. Mostly in animal cells
What do cilia and flagella do?
They aid in movement. Cilia are short hair like projections. Flagella are long whip like projections
