Q

Compare and contrast justification and Regeneration

A

Regeneration is distinct from justification but closely related to it, and the two are inseparable in our own experience.

Justification is God’s work for us, forgiveness of our sins and change of status before God. Regeneration is God’s work IN us, the gift of the indwelling Spirit.

Regeneration means that we die to our old life and come alive to Christ (Romans 6:2-4)

Q

What are the two points that Lodahl makes regarding the temptation of Jesus…

A

Regarding Jesus’ temptations in the wilderness
1) the options given to Jesus must have been appealing…
2) the options must have truly been within Jesus’ reach
In order for the covenantal possibilities of faithful obedience to be fulfilled it must be the case that Jesus could have yielded to temptation.

Q

How does our HOD define justification and what scripture supports this?

A

Justification describes the act of God which changes the relationship between ourselves and Him. Although we are sinners, God declares us righteous because of our faith in Chris (Romans 3:22)

Like returning prodigals we are treated as one who has rights to the Fathers fellowship (Luke 15:17-24)

Q

Discuss the details of our assurance of Salvation…

A

We believe that God has accepted us and saved us and has given us eternal life.

Holy Spirit is the seal and guarantee of our salvation and assures us of the truth of the effectiveness of the gospel message in us.

Our new life, our determination to obey God, our break with the past and our new spiritual direction are all evidence of our adoption into God’s family! (Romans 8:14-17)

Assurance does NOT mean that we may never be troubled by doubt or that we will always be aware of the work of the spirit within us.

Our confidence is not based on changing moods or feelings, but on the word of God!

17
Q

Define dikaiosune…

A

The Greek word which is translated as righteousness.

18
Q

Define dikaio…

A

Greek for “to justify”

19
Q

How is the doctrine of Justification consistent with the OT teachings? (3 points)

A

A. It shows that sin is universal (Psalm 14:3) but forgiveness is provided by God (Psalm 130:3,4).

B. Abraham’s belief in Gods promise to give him an heir was credited to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:6).

C. The image of a court of law as the means by which God provides for human salvation is evident in the OT (Psalm 43:1).

20
Q

What two elements are necessary for human justification according to our keeping with Arminianism?

A

Salvation is conditional on human response.

We must choose to accept the gift that is offered.

21
Q

How did John Wesley distinguish between justification and human righteousness?

A

Justification is imputed righteousness and sanctification is actually being made just and righteous.

This suggest that sanctification is the fruit of justification.

22
Q

What is the definition of adoption and what does it imply?

A

The action of God whereby he admits those born anew to the conditions and privileges of sons.

This implies- a change of nature and a change of relationship.

1 John 3:1// How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!

23
Q

How is our inheritance as adopted children of God confirmed?

A

Our inheritance is confirmed by the word//we are joint heirs of God Romans 8:17
Confirmed by every spiritual blessing in Christ//Ephesians 1:3
Confirmed by the Holy Spirit//deposit guaranteeing inheritance Ephesians 1:13-14

24
Q

What are two possible reasons someone might not have assurance of their salvation?

A

Some may just not realize they have it.

Some may not have fully complied with the conditions.

“The certainty of any truth is not mathematical or scientific, but experiential. I know because it has happened to me.” Baxter
