Doctrine 4 Unit 1 Flashcards
Define Sacrament
Mystery; the means by which a believer partakes in the mystery of Christ through symbolic actions; Augustine//the sign of a very sacred thing; council of Trent//a visible sign of invisible grace
Anti-Sacramental
Against the sacraments
Pan-sacramental
The view that for the believer all of life is a sacrament
Transubstantiation
The Roman Catholic interpretation in which it is believed that during the administration of the sacrament the substance (but not appearance) or the bread and wine is transformed into the literal body and blood of Christ.
Consubstantiation
Martin Luther’s reaction to transubstantiation resulted in…the view that after consecration of the substances bread/wine body/blood coexist in union with each other. They are united yet each intact to itself.
Receptionism
Through faith Christ is spiritually present in the Supper. “Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we gave thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?”
Memorialism
Deny any form of physical or spiritual presence in the substances. See the title as purely a remembrance of Christ’s suffering on our behalf.
Charisma
Charismata: spiritual gifts
Chairs: Grace
Pneuma
Spirit
Cessationist View
Gifts ended with the apostles and will never be revived. A reformers view especially John Calvin.
Matthew 3:11-17
John the Baptist: “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worth to carry. He will baptize toy with the Holy Spirit and with Fire…then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him saying I need to be baptized by you and do you come to me? But Jesus answered him , Let it be so now for this it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness…and when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the spirit of God descending like a dove coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved son, with whom I am well pleased”
Acts 10:44-48
While Peter was still saying all these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles. For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then peter declared, Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.
Baptism
The sacramental rite which admits a candidate into the Christian church. For some churches it symbolizes cleansing while in other it is the means of cleansing from sin.
Acts 2:38
Baptism was the initiation of the church (day of Pentecost) ; done in the name of Jesus; included in repentance and faith
