Unit 10 Flashcards
Doctrine 10
We believe that it is the privilege of all believers to be wholly sanctified, and that their whole spirit and soul and body may be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
What are the two most prominent biblical words for holiness?
Qodesh (Hebrew)// Referring to the holiness of God. Refers to what is sanctified and made holy by the Lord. Setting apart to God and for God.
Hagios (Greek)// Referring to the holiness of God. Refers to those saints made Holy by God.
What are three aspects of the sanctified state?
Belonging to God//possessed and indwelt by God.
Being Separated to God//Free from all other commitments.
Being Holy in character// Separate from anything contrary to divine nature.
What are the differences between consecration and sanctification?
Consecration//dedicating act done by man. Holiness is a free choice. It is achieved by the work of God in a believers life, also a product of human choice.
Sanctification// the act by which God bestows His holiness on that which is being consecrated. This is God’s action to make the believer Holy.
What is Wesley’s view on Christian perfection?
Wesley’s view was not that a Christian could be so good that they had no room for growth or improvement, but had the biblical sense of achieving the desired end and maturity or the telios which is the Greek word fro perfect but literally means end or target.
Explain Holiness as a crisis and process…
Holiness is often experienced as a crisis because it is such a decisive turning point and decision, but sanctification becomes a life long process. Christ’s presence in us changes our self-image. We seek close relationship with the Lord and as a result of this deep bonding relationship we become marked and holiness becomes evident over time.
Describe the work of the trinity in holiness…
Holiness is the will of God the Father//to strengthen our hearts for holiness 1 Thess 3:13
Holiness is the work of Christ on the cross//Hebrews 13:12 possibility of sanctification
Holiness is effected by the indwelling of
Holy Spirit// The work of transformation Galatians 5:22-23
What does God’s provision result in, in the life of the disciple?
A holy life!
To be God’s dwelling place// 1 Cor 6:17-20
To be his servant// 2 corinthians 5:15
Christ-likeness// 2 Peter 1:3-8
Interpretations of the holiness experience:
Entire sanctification// taken from 1 Thessalonians 5:23, not to be used to express a state of sinless perfection, but to express how sanctification effects the whole personality.
Full Salvation// A life founded on the full gift of God’s grace. The completion of
God’s saving work, but not beyond receiving further grace.
Infilling of the Holy Spirit// Fullness. The fullness which we are empowered to live the Christian life and be witnesses to the faith.
Baptism of the Holy Spirit//Baptism is a symbol of dying to ourselves and emerging as new persons. Baptism happens once at the beginning of our experience where as infilling happens throughout our life.
Second Blessing// Used to distinguish the experience of sanctification from the experience of justification and regeneration.
Blessing of a clean heart// Emphasizing removal of unworthy self centered attitudes of heart and mind.
Perfect love//We are filled with God’s perfect love so that we can begin to love not with our own flawed love, but with the unselfish love of Christ.
Central points of Wesley’s theology
The nature of the human situation//total corruption of first man and woman through disobedience.
Prevenient grace// The beginning of God drawing a person to Himself.
Law&Love//fulfillment of law’s moral obligations to the process and end of sanctification.
Progressive movement// The Christian life is designed from new birth to entire sanctification and perfection in love.
End result/ Works of love not an inner spirituality.
What did Wesley caution on about the second work of grace?
To guard against using the phrase “receiving the spirit” because this language could employ that Holy Spirit did not already live in those believers who had experienced the new birth, but not yet perfected in love.
Teachings on Holiness from Coutts and Brengle…
Brengle//Elimination of the sin nature.
Coutts//Redirection of the will towards good. What needs sanctifying is the will.
Holiness does not imply eradication of the normal human appetites but rather redirection and control by the Holy Spirit.
Dr. Ermakov on Holiness as seen in Mark//
Holiness as power//Mark 1:21-28//evil spirits recognize Jesus’ power even if disciples do not. Evil spirit cannot be in the presence of Jesus and must leave he man.
Contagious holiness//Mark 1:40-45// you cannot touch an impurity because it will spread, yet Jesus touched unclean people and spread healing and holiness. His power is greater than any unclean thing. Lepers are healed rather than spreading their disease to Jesus.
Holiness and restoration//Mark 5// if I can just touch his clothes I will be healed. Jesus brings restoration. Healing is restoration.
