Unit 7 Flashcards
Descent with modification
changes that have accumulated over time since 2 groups of the same species split
Evolution
change in the genetic makeup of a population from one generation to the next
Natural Selection
variations from previous generations that are best suited for growth and reproduction will continue disproportionally to the next generations
Darwin’s Postulates
- members of a species vary from one another
- some phenotypic variation is heritable
- organisms always compete for resources
- variations that increase survival and reproduction will be passed down
Convergent Evolution:
two different species evolve similar traits in response to similar selective pressures
Effects of natural selection (x3)
stabilization: maintains status que, against extremes
directional: change in population from selective pressures
disruptive: acts against intermediates, favors extremes
Intrasexual Selection
sexual selection focused on interactions between the same sex
Intersexual Selection
sexual selection focused on interactions between the different sexes
Somatic Mutations occur in__________ and are/are not passed down
nonreproductive cells
not passed down
Germline Mutations occur in__________ and are/are not passed down
reproductive egg and sperm
are passed down
