Unit 6.7-8 - Effects of Migration/Causation in the Imperial Age Flashcards
Gender and ethnicities of most migrant workers
Men; Indian (indentured) and the Chinese
Effect of migration on societies
They formed ethnic enclaves and cultural groups
Effect of mainly men migrating to work on gender roles in home countries
While some men waited for another man to live with their families and assume the male role, in other societies, women took over the man’s roles and responsibilities. They had more power in decision-making, a life outside of their domestic/family life, and gained more autonomy/authority
Remittance
Money from foreign earnings (often sent back home to one’s family)
Ethnic Enclave
Clusters or neighborhoods of people from the same foreign country
Where ethnic enclaves formed
In many major cities
Difference between lives/work of Chinese immigrants based on where they lived
Their work ranged from working in garment or cigarette factories (San Fran./Cuba) to mining (guano in Peru), helping with public works projects (U.S./Peru), and farming (sugar plantations in Cuba/Peru & Americas). Many grew wealthy as business owners and traders.
Some of the first indentured servants to be sent to British colonies
Indians
How Indians were treated in South Afr.
Working on sugar plantations or constructing railroads, Indians often faced injust discrimination
Who attempted to improve the lives of Indians living in South Afr.?
Mohandas Gandhi and his Natal Indian Congress through nationalism against British rule and the discrimination
Labor system that replaced indentured servitude in Ceylon, Burma, and Malaya
Kangani system (recruiting others to work, such as having a whole family work rather than just recruiting one)
Differences between Indentured Servitude and Kangani system
The Kangani system was less restricting and workers were with their family
Areas of Caribbean culture that Indian migrants affected
Indians blended their traditions with the culture of other migrants, affecting national cusines, films, and music
How did Irish men help the Ameri. Industry?
By creating the canal system (greater exploitation of coal, it could be moved further, and be sold for cheaper)
Examples of how Irish immigrants affected Amer. culture
They spread their lively dance music, holidays/traditions like St. Patrick’s Day, and Catholicism
Life of Second-Gen Irish in the U.S.
Oftentimes, they were white-collar (office), blue-collar (manual labor) workers, or stars of the new popular culture (like athletes) becoming very wealthy/powerful
Reason many immigrants faced prrejudice in their new countries
Chinese immigrants faced prejudice from natives because they were willing to work for less
Ways (2) that the USA attempted to regulate/limit Chinese immigration
An 1879 constitution prohibited many companies from hiring Chinese workers, any non-whites from becoming citizens, and encouraged cities/towns to remove/segregate Chinese in addition to the Chinese Exclusion act with banned Chinese immigration
How Australia’s response to Chinese immigration was similar to the U.S.’s
They also passed many acts such as the Chinese Immigration Act, Regulation and Restriction Act, and Influx of Chinese Restriction Act, which all dealt with trying to limit and ban the diaspora of Chinese into Australia.
How the quality of life for all peoples was effected because of the Industrial Revoultion
Shown by the growth in real wages and the increase in goods available for cheaper prices, standards of living increased
Cause of international trade shifting from mercantilist economies to capitalism based ones
Overproduction was becoming a serious problem because countries could produce more goods so they opened up trade in order to sell more.
Result of U.S. migration regulation acts
Some Chinese began to moving to Mexico, where the president Porfirio Diaz encouraged immigration
The White Australia Policy
British parliament’s act against non-British immigration to Australia in order to “preserve it”
Effect of the desire to increase exports
Economic and political rivalries amongst industrialized countries
